Honolulu Economic Development: Tourism
Tourism is a key driver of Hawaii's economy.
In 2001, direct effect from Tourism accounted for 24 percent of
the state employment and 18% of Gross State Product. Approximately
10 percent of the revenues in tourism come from Waikiki located
in Honolulu County. Major improvements to the east end of Waikiki
including the Kuhio beach have been completed. With 36,303 hotel
rooms, and one of the nation's newest convention centers, Waikiki
is the single largest visitor destination in the state. The newest
visitor destination on Oahu, Ko Olina resort, is 20 minutes west
of the airport.
Support for Hawaii tourism comes from the following organizations:
Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau
Hawaii Tourism Authority
Health and Wellness
Hawaii Eco-tourism
School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology
