Hawaii has made 200 motion pictures since 1913, 18 TV series
since 1968 and 735 TV episodes since mid 60's.
Honolulu is the hub
of the film and video production industry in Hawaii. Over 70 feature
films and 700 hours of television have been filmed here with countless
national and local television commercials. From 1995 through 2000,
Honolulu film industry expenditures have grown 79%.
In 2001, Hawaii's film and digital media industry employed 4,247
people in 393 establishments with an annual payroll of $110 million.
Honolulu alone employed 3,557 people in 275 establishments with
an annual payroll of $98 million.

Honolulu's film making assets include sophisticated production
companies, the most beautiful scenery on earth, on-site equipment
and crews, an LA style soundstage, and all the amenities of a major
production community. Honolulu's film studio is considered state-of-the-art
suitable for various production requirements.
Apart from being warm and sunny, Honolulu is the only location
in US to find tropical locations. Unique locations throughout Hawaii
include: Active volcano, Cattle Ranches, Snow Capped Peaks, Dense
Jungles and Best Beaches.

production companies and production support services in the state.
Hawaii Film Office is central for film permitting. Additional support
is available through film offices in Kauai, Maui, Honolulu and Big
Island. In Honolulu, City and County Honolulu Film Office
will help you find the locations and resources for production on
the Island of Oahu. Their website also provides helpful links to
help streamlined location planning and permitting.
The Academy for Creative Media (ACM)
is a proposed system-wide interdisciplinary initiative that seeks
to leverage existing University resources and assets across all
ten University of Hawai'i (UH) campuses and the three UH Centers
in the architecting of a comprehensive, world-class creative media
program.
Collaborative Software Development Laboratory
at the Department of Information and Computer Sciences in UH works
with the mission to provide a physical, organizational, technological,
and intellectual environment conducive to collaborative development
of world-class software engineering skills.
Hawaii and Honolulu also offer Motion Picture and Film
Production Income Tax Credit. Maximum Credit amount
for motion picture or television project while filming in Hawaii:
- 4% of total production expenditures
(payroll & purchases).
- 7.25% of transient accommodations tax (hotel
room tax).
100% of these credits if:
- Hawaiian name or word is included in title
of the project.
- Utilizes Hawaiian scenery, culture or products
on screen.
- Feature film spends minimum $2m or TV spends
minimum $750,000.
- Distribution covers minimum of 66% of US
coverage (EDI or Nielsen).
75% of the credits if:
- Minimum $3 million for feature
film or $1 million for TV.
- 50% of below the line positions are provided
by Hawaii residents.
- Distribution covers minimum of 66% of US
coverage (EDI or Nielsen)
