This Week's Blue Economy Innovation

Natural fibers are used not only for clothing, but also in a series of industrial goods. The most commonly used fiber is cotton, but this plant needs much fertilizer and artificial irrigation.

When looking for new fibers from renewable raw materials, Ji Yujun, a textile company manager from China turned towards algae. Each summer the algae bloom carries a lot of problems for the coastal zones of China, especially for water supply and the fishery. But the millions of tons of algae are too valuable to just be left to rot at landfills. Their fibers can be converted into a skin-regenerating fabric which can be used not only for fashion, but also in a broad variety of functional clothing and for medical purpose.

Waste is turned into a locally available resource, environmental problems are being solved and jobs generated. For these reasons the production of algae fibers is an excellent example of the Blue Economy logic.
